Participants of all ages and abilities joined the festival of movement — from seasoned marathoners to parents jogging alongside their young children, proving once again why this event holds a special place in the heart of Limerick.

Organisers confirmed that this year’s attendance was the largest on record, with tens of thousands of supporters lining the streets to cheer on runners throughout the 6-mile, 10k, and half-marathon routes. The route passed through the iconic landmarks of Limerick city, creating an electric atmosphere and showcasing the region’s deep-rooted community spirit.

One race official shared their excitement on the day: “We’ve never seen energy like this. It’s not just a race — it’s a celebration of everything Limerick stands for. Community, fitness, resilience, and togetherness.

The day began with early starts for the longer distances, as elite runners and competitive athletes paced through the streets under optimal conditions. But it was the mass community participation that stole the show, as local businesses, charities, fitness groups, and schools all showed up in force, some in costume, many running for deeply personal causes.

One participant who ran the 10k in memory of a family member said: “This wasn’t about time for me. It was about being part of something powerful. Running with 14,000 others… you feel unstoppable.

The Children’s Run for Fun, held the day prior, was equally moving. Thousands of children took part in the event designed to promote healthy habits, joy in physical activity, and family bonding. The inclusive run welcomed kids of all backgrounds, including neurodivergent children and those with physical disabilities.

A parent who attended with their two children remarked: “It was pure joy. No competition, no pressure, just kids running and laughing and feeling proud of themselves. That’s what this is all about.

Organisers also ensured the event was as inclusive and accessible as possible. Special provisions were made for participants requiring assistance, and water stations, medical points, and marshals were in place across the city.

From a logistical point of view, the event ran with clockwork precision. Gardaí coordinated with organisers to ensure road closures and safety measures were in place, and stewards supported along the course to manage the crowd flow and guide runners.

Notably, the local economic impact of the event was significant. With thousands of visitors flooding into Limerick over the weekend, hotels were fully booked, cafés and restaurants saw long queues, and retail stores reported a boost in foot traffic.

Local shop owners in the city centre noted: “It’s like Christmas came early. Footfall was insane — and not just locals, people from all over Ireland were here. The whole weekend had a buzz to it.

The post-run celebrations brought more scenes of joy as runners were welcomed across the finish line with medals, music, refreshments, and emotional embraces. Many could be seen taking selfies with their medals, congratulating strangers, and planning to return next year.

Beyond the physical feat, the 2025 Great Limerick Run stands as a landmark event in terms of community well-being, pride, and social impact. It marked a reminder of how sport can unite people across generations, backgrounds, and beliefs.

With next year already being talked about, and registration numbers expected to grow, one thing is clear — Limerick has not just hosted a race, it has ignited a movement.
