Overnight Inferno Destroys Donegal Church
In the early hours of April 21, 2025, a devastating fire engulfed St. Mary’s Church (Séipéal Mhuire) in Derrybeg, Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal. The blaze, reported around 4 a.m., completely gutted the octagonal-shaped building, leaving the local community in shock and mourning.

Historical Significance of St. Mary’s Church
Constructed in 1972, St. Mary’s Church was a central place of worship for the Gaoth Dobhair parish. Designed by Patrick Carr & Partners and built by Joseph McMenamin & Sons, the church was known for its unique architectural design and capacity to accommodate approximately 900 congregants.
Community Response and Emotional Impact
Monsignor Kevin Gillespie, Diocesan Administrator of the Raphoe Diocese, expressed profound sorrow over the incident. “I am heartbroken to learn of the destruction by fire this morning of Séipéal Mhuire, na Doirí Beaga, the parish church for the parish of Gaoth Dobhair,” he stated. He extended support to Parish Priest Fr. Briain Ó Fearraigh and gratitude to the fire brigade and Gardaí for their efforts.
Local representatives echoed the community’s grief. Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty described the event as “absolutely devastating,” noting personal ties to the church, including his father’s anniversary mass scheduled for the same week. Fianna Fáil TD Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher emphasized the church’s role as the “heart and soul” of the community, highlighting its significance in local traditions and ceremonies.

Investigation and Future Plans
Emergency services, including five units of the fire brigade and Gardaí, responded promptly to the scene. While no injuries were reported, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. A Garda spokesperson confirmed that the scene is preserved for technical examination, and inquiries are ongoing.
Despite the tragedy, community leaders expressed determination to rebuild. Monsignor Gillespie conveyed hope, stating, “With God’s help, with Our Lady’s intercession, with the support of the community and the hard work of the clergy, a new parish church will rise again in one form or another.”
