He spent four months in the Mater Hospital, followed by two and a half years in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, before finally returning home in July 2024.

Financial Independence Stripped Away

Upon returning home, Gorman was informed by the Department of Social Protection that he was no longer eligible for the disability allowance he had been receiving during his rehabilitation. The reason cited was that his partner, Saoirse, earns above the €386 weekly threshold, placing them over the income limit for the allowance. This decision has left Gorman without a personal income, making him financially dependent on his partner.

Gorman expressed his frustration, stating, “They just think it is fine to take it away. My financial independence is gone because my partner has a job and earns a wage, which is madness really.” He added, “As a 26-year-old individual, I should not have to go and ask my girlfriend or parents or anybody for, essentially, pocket money. It is nothing short of a disgrace, and there is nothing we can do.”

Living with a spinal cord injury presents numerous challenges beyond mobility issues. He emphasized the need for better support systems to help individuals with disabilities reintegrate into the community, stating, “You have to fight for a lot of things you shouldn’t have to fight for.”

Gorman and his partner feel that their only options are for Saoirse to quit her job or move out, both of which are unreasonable solutions.
