Incident Overview

The flight, carrying 179 passengers and six crew members, was en route to Milan when it encountered unexpected and intense turbulence around 8:30 p.m. local time. The turbulence was attributed to a severe thunderstorm system in the region. The pilot made the decision to divert the aircraft to Memmingen Airport in Bavaria, approximately 115 kilometers west of Munich.

Upon landing, emergency services assessed all individuals on board. Three passengers required hospitalization: a woman with a head injury, her two-year-old child with bruises, and another woman experiencing back pain. The remaining injured individuals received medical attention at the scene and were subsequently released.

Passenger Accounts

Passengers described the experience as sudden and violent, with some individuals being thrown against the cabin ceiling due to the lack of warning before the turbulence struck. One passenger recounted, “I’ve never been scared before, but in that moment, I thought the plane was going to break apart or roll over.”

Airline Response

Ryanair confirmed the incident and stated that the flight’s captain had requested medical assistance ahead of landing. The airline arranged alternative transportation for passengers to reach their final destination in Milan, including bus transfers and a replacement flight the following morning. Ryanair issued an apology to those affected by the diversion.

Weather Conditions

The turbulence encountered by the flight was part of a broader pattern of severe weather affecting southern Germany. The German Weather Service had issued warnings for thunderstorms, hail, strong winds, and heavy rainfall in the region. In Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, strong winds tore roofs off several homes, and emergency services responded to numerous storm-related incidents, including fallen trees and flooded basements.

Safety Considerations

This incident underscores the importance of adhering to safety protocols during flights, including keeping seat belts fastened when seated, even when the seat belt sign is off. While turbulence is a common occurrence in air travel, severe instances such as this highlight the need for continuous monitoring of weather conditions and prompt decision-making by flight crews to ensure passenger safety.
