Pope Francis Dies at 88
A Pontificate That Redefined the Papacy Ends
On Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. The announcement was made by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, who stated, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.”
A Historic Papacy
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was elected as the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13, 2013. He was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, and the first non-European pontiff in over a millennium. His election followed the unprecedented resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

Pope Francis chose his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, reflecting his commitment to humility, poverty, and social justice. He was known for his simple lifestyle, opting to live in the Vatican guesthouse rather than the Apostolic Palace. He often emphasized the importance of serving the marginalized and underprivileged, stating, “My people are poor and I am one of them.”
Health Challenges
Throughout his life, Pope Francis faced several health issues. In his early twenties, he had part of one lung removed due to a severe respiratory infection. In February 2025, he was hospitalized with bronchitis, which developed into bilateral pneumonia. After a 38-day hospital stay, he returned to his residence to continue recovery. Despite some improvements, his health deteriorated, leading to his passing.

Legacy and Reforms
Pope Francis’s papacy was marked by efforts to modernize the Church and address contemporary issues. He advocated for environmental protection, social justice, and interfaith dialogue. In 2015, he released the encyclical “Laudato Si’,” emphasizing the moral imperative to combat climate change.
He also took steps to address the Church’s handling of sexual abuse cases, implementing reforms to increase transparency and accountability. His approach to LGBTQ+ issues was notable; he supported civil unions for same-sex couples and famously remarked, “Who am I to judge?” when asked about gay individuals seeking God.
Global Impact
Pope Francis’s influence extended beyond the Catholic Church. He was a vocal advocate for the poor, refugees, and marginalized communities. His emphasis on compassion and inclusivity resonated with many worldwide, earning him the moniker “the world’s parish priest.”
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from global leaders, religious figures, and laypeople alike, reflecting the profound impact of his leadership.
The Path Forward
With Pope Francis’s passing, the Holy See enters a period known as “sede vacante,” during which the College of Cardinals governs the Church’s day-to-day affairs. A papal conclave will be convened to elect his successor. Speculation about potential candidates includes Cardinals Pietro Parolin of Italy, Robert Sarah of Guinea, and Luis Tagle of the Philippines.
The funeral arrangements are expected to reflect Pope Francis’s wishes for simplicity and humility. Details regarding the funeral Mass and related ceremonies will be announced by the Vatican in due course.
