Potential Successors Emerge as Catholic Church Awaits New Leader
The Roman Catholic Church stands at a pivotal juncture as it prepares to elect the 267th pope following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025. The conclave, set to commence on May 7, will convene 135 cardinal electors under the age of 80 within the Sistine Chapel, adhering to centuries-old traditions to select the next leader of the Church .

The Conclave Process
The conclave is governed by the apostolic constitution “Universi Dominici Gregis,” which outlines the procedures for electing a new pope. Cardinals will reside in the Domus Sanctae Marthae and are sequestered from the outside world to ensure the integrity of the election process. Voting occurs up to four times daily, requiring a two-thirds majority to elect a new pope. The results are signaled by smoke: black indicates no decision, while white announces the successful election of a new pontiff .
Cardinal Becciu’s Withdrawal
A significant development preceding the conclave is the withdrawal of Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu. Convicted in 2023 for embezzlement and other financial crimes related to a failed London property investment, Becciu was sentenced to five and a half years in prison. Although he is appealing the conviction, Becciu announced his decision to abstain from the conclave “for the good of the Church,” aligning with the wishes expressed by Pope Francis prior to his death .

Potential Successors
The upcoming conclave is marked by the absence of a clear frontrunner, reflecting the diverse perspectives within the College of Cardinals. Notable candidates include:
- Cardinal Pietro Parolin: The Vatican Secretary of State, known for his diplomatic acumen, though some conservatives express reservations about his approach to international relations .

- Cardinal Peter Erdo: Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, favored by traditionalists for his doctrinal conservatism .

- Cardinal Mario Grech: Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, seen as a moderate with a focus on pastoral care .

- Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle: Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, representing a progressive vision for the Church .

The conclave’s outcome remains uncertain, with the potential for unexpected candidates to emerge, continuing the tradition of surprise selections in papal history.
