Punjab Kings Roar to Second as Playoff Race Tightens in IPL 2025
IPL 2025 Playoff Battle Heats Up as Punjab Kings Demolish Lucknow
The race for the IPL 2025 playoffs is reaching fever pitch after Punjab Kings climbed to second place on the table with a dominant win over Lucknow Super Giants in Match 54. With only a few matches remaining before the knockout stage, the points table is in flux, and the margin for error is vanishing fast.
Punjab’s victory — their seventh of the season — was not just about two points. It was a statement of intent, a reminder that this franchise, often overlooked in the past, is now a genuine title contender.

The Kings chased down a modest target of 159 with clinical ease, winning by seven wickets and more than two overs to spare. Their net run rate received a crucial boost, and the side now sits comfortably in second place, behind only Rajasthan Royals.
Captain Shikhar Dhawan, reflecting on the performance, said: “We played like a team today. The bowlers set the tone, and the batters finished the job. Every match is a final now, and we’re treating it that way.”
The result pushed Lucknow down the table and delivered a blow to their playoff hopes. While still mathematically alive, they will now need a near-perfect run in their final matches — and favourable results elsewhere.
The match itself was one-sided from the outset. Lucknow never quite got going with the bat. Despite a decent start in the powerplay, wickets fell at regular intervals, and none of their middle-order batters managed to anchor the innings. Punjab’s bowling was disciplined, with Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh striking early and often.
Lucknow finished their innings on 158/8 — a total that seemed below par on a good batting surface.
Punjab’s response was methodical. Prabhsimran Singh gave them a flying start with a brisk 42 off 26 balls, and Liam Livingstone followed with a typically aggressive 38. The chase was wrapped up with a calm finish by Dhawan and Sam Curran, who guided the team home in the 18th over.
After the match, Curran noted: “We’re peaking at the right time. That’s what matters in this tournament — momentum heading into the playoffs.”
The victory adds another layer of drama to an already chaotic qualification picture. As of now, only Rajasthan Royals look close to securing a guaranteed playoff berth. Every other team remains in the mix, but with only top four qualifying, the margin between success and elimination is razor-thin.
Here’s how the table looks at present (as per the latest points count):
- Rajasthan Royals – 16 points
- Punjab Kings – 14 points
- Chennai Super Kings – 12 points
- Kolkata Knight Riders – 12 points
- Lucknow Super Giants – 10 points
- Delhi Capitals – 10 points
- Mumbai Indians – 10 points
- Sunrisers Hyderabad – 8 points
- Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 6 points
- Gujarat Titans – 6 points
With just 6 matches left in the league phase, teams are scrambling to improve their net run rate and secure crucial wins. Kolkata Knight Riders, in particular, remain hopeful after Lucknow’s loss. With their own upcoming fixtures providing a window of opportunity, a playoff berth remains within reach.
One IPL analyst summed it up: “Every over, every wicket, every run — it all counts now. This is the most open playoff race we’ve seen in years.”
Punjab’s resurgence is also winning them fans. Long dismissed as inconsistent, they are showing maturity, composure, and game sense. With a balanced side featuring experienced internationals and exciting Indian talent, they may just be the dark horse of the season.
Meanwhile, the pressure mounts for Lucknow. With competition so tight, even one more loss could mean curtains for their playoff aspirations.
As the tournament nears its climax, the playoff puzzle remains incomplete — and unpredictable. But one thing is certain: Punjab Kings have now placed themselves firmly at the centre of the conversation.
