Secrets in Ballypatrick Forest: Who Killed Inga Maria Hauser?
In April 1988, the brutal murder of 18-year-old German backpacker Inga Maria Hauser in Northern Ireland shocked the nation and left a family devastated. More than three decades later, the case remains unsolved, with recent developments offering a glimmer of hope for justice.

A Promising Journey Turns Tragic
Inga Maria Hauser, a vibrant and adventurous teenager from Munich, embarked on a solo backpacking trip across the United Kingdom in late March 1988. Her diary entries and postcards reveal her enthusiasm for travel and the people she met along the way. On April 6, she boarded a ferry from Stranraer, Scotland, to Larne, Northern Ireland, intending to travel south to Dublin. However, for reasons unknown, she never reached her destination.
Discovery in Ballypatrick Forest
Fourteen days after her arrival in Northern Ireland, Inga Maria’s partially clothed body was discovered in Ballypatrick Forest near Ballycastle, County Antrim. She had been sexually assaulted and suffered fatal injuries, including a broken neck. Her belongings, including her diary and camera, were found nearby. The remote location of her body suggested that her killer was familiar with the area.
Investigation and DNA Evidence
The initial investigation faced challenges, including limited eyewitness accounts and the political climate of the time. However, forensic experts obtained a full male DNA profile from the crime scene. Despite one of the largest DNA screenings in the UK, involving over 2,000 samples, no match has been found. In 2018, police arrested a 60-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman in connection with the case, but prosecutors later decided not to pursue charges due to insufficient evidence.
Renewed Hope Through Inquest
In November 2024, a pre-inquest review was convened in Belfast, marking a significant development in the case. Coroner Joe McCrisken acknowledged the family’s long wait for answers and expressed commitment to facilitating a thorough investigation. Inga Maria’s sister, Friederike, attended the hearing via videolink, expressing “trust and considerable hope” in the process. The inquest aims to examine new evidence and provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding Inga Maria’s death.
Community Appeals and Memorial
Over the years, community leaders and politicians have urged individuals with information to come forward. In December 2019, a memorial stone was erected in Ballypatrick Forest to honor Inga Maria’s memory. The case has been featured in documentaries and podcasts, keeping public interest alive and highlighting the need for resolution.
The murder of Inga Maria Hauser remains one of Northern Ireland’s most haunting unsolved cases. The ongoing inquest represents a crucial step toward uncovering the truth and delivering justice for Inga Maria and her family. As the investigation continues, there is hope that those responsible will be held accountable, bringing closure to a case that has lingered for far too long.
