Self-Proclaimed ‘King of Germany’ Arrested in Far-Right Crackdown
In May 2025, German authorities arrested Peter Fitzek, a self-proclaimed “King of Germany,” and banned his far-right group, the “Kingdom of Germany” (Königreich Deutschland). This action was part of a broader crackdown on extremist movements challenging the legitimacy of the German state.

Fitzek, a 59-year-old former chef and karate instructor, declared himself monarch in 2012, establishing a parallel state with its own institutions, including a bank, insurance system, judiciary, and currency. His organization, affiliated with the Reichsbürger movement, denies the legitimacy of the modern German state and seeks to restore historical borders.
The Reichsbürger movement, to which Fitzek’s group belongs, is known for its conspiratorial and antisemitic rhetoric. Members often reject the authority of the federal government, refuse to pay taxes, and create their own identification documents. The movement has been under increased scrutiny following a 2022 foiled coup plot involving Prince Heinrich XIII Reuss, who aimed to overthrow the government and install himself as head of state.
In coordinated raids across seven German states, approximately 800 police officers arrested Fitzek and three other leaders of the Kingdom of Germany. Authorities seized evidence and assets, including documents related to the group’s illegal banking and insurance operations. The German Interior Ministry cited the group’s antisemitic conspiracy theories and criminal economic activities as threats to the democratic order.
Fitzek has a history of legal issues, including convictions for assault and using fake driving licenses issued by his self-declared kingdom. Despite previous regulatory interventions, his organization continued to operate, acquiring land and raising significant funds from supporters.
The German government’s actions against the Kingdom of Germany are part of a broader effort to combat the rise of far-right extremism. This includes increased surveillance of extremist groups and legal actions against members of related organizations. The crackdown underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the constitution and maintaining democratic order.
