Sky TV Outage Leaves Over 30,000 UK Customers in the Dark
On the evening of May 15, 2025, a significant technical issue disrupted Sky’s television services across the United Kingdom, leaving over 30,000 customers unable to access live broadcasts and on-demand content. The outage, which primarily affected Sky Q users, began around 9:20 PM and coincided with the second Eurovision semi-final, intensifying customer frustration.

Scope and Nature of the Outage
According to reports from DownDetector, more than 33,000 users experienced service interruptions, with the majority unable to access television content despite having functioning internet connections. Customers reported receiving error messages such as “You can’t watch TV at the moment due to a connectivity problem,” even when their broadband services were operational. Some users also experienced complete service blackouts, affecting both television and internet services.
Customer Reactions and Temporary Solutions
The unexpected disruption led to a surge of complaints on social media platforms. One user expressed their frustration, stating, “What a time for a nationwide Sky TV to go down during Eurovision. Hope it comes back soon.” Another customer noted, “Mine says ‘you can’t watch TV at the moment due to connectivity problem.’ But my internet is fine and the box is connected. Has to be at Sky’s end.”
In the absence of official guidance, some users attempted to resolve the issue by power cycling their Sky Q boxes. One customer shared their approach: “Turn off from mains. Plug in. Allow for box to load and quickly get into settings.” However, these measures provided only temporary relief, with many reporting recurring problems shortly after.
Impact on Sky Glass and Sky Stream Users
While Sky Q users bore the brunt of the outage, some Sky Glass and Sky Stream customers also reported issues. Sky Glass users experienced black screens with audio still functioning or prolonged loading messages. Temporary workarounds, such as unplugging and restarting the TV, offered limited success. Sky acknowledged the issue, stating, “We’re aware of a technical issue which we believe is impacting a small number of Sky Glass customers. We’re investigating this as a priority and are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
Lack of Official Communication
As of the time of writing, Sky had not issued a comprehensive statement detailing the cause of the outage or providing an estimated time for service restoration. This lack of communication further exacerbated customer dissatisfaction, with many expressing disappointment over the company’s silence during the disruption.
The widespread outage on May 15, 2025, highlighted the vulnerabilities in digital television services and the importance of timely communication from service providers during technical disruptions. As customers await a detailed explanation and resolution from Sky, the incident serves as a reminder of the need for robust infrastructure and proactive customer support in the digital age.
