Spain Reigns Supreme in European Soccer with Record Fourth Title
Spain has solidified its dominance in European soccer by claiming a record fourth UEFA European Championship title. In a heartbreaking finale for England, Spain triumphed with a 2-1 victory in the championship match on Sunday, adding another chapter to England’s long history of near-misses and underachievement in major tournaments.
The final, held at Berlin’s Olympiastadion, saw Spain complete a tournament they controlled from start to finish. Mikel Oyarzabal emerged as the unexpected hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 86th minute. Oyarzabal, a backup striker who substituted for captain Alvaro Morata, deftly slid in to connect with a left-wing cross from Marc Cucurella, just when the game seemed headed for extra time.
Despite being the birthplace of soccer, England continues to struggle in securing major titles in the men’s game, their last triumph being the 1966 World Cup. The English players watched in despair as Alvaro Morata lifted the silver trophy amid a backdrop of confetti and fireworks, a fitting celebration in the historic stadium built for the 1936 Olympics.
Spain’s victory in 2024 adds to their previous titles won in 1964, 2008, and 2012, further cementing their status as a powerhouse in international soccer.
