Two Arrested in Connection with Planned Bombing at Lady Gaga’s Rio Performance
On May 3, 2025, Lady Gaga delivered a historic free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, drawing an estimated 2.1 million fans—the largest audience of her career. The event, part of the city’s “Todo Mundo no Rio” initiative, was a celebration of music and unity. However, behind the scenes, Brazilian authorities were executing “Operation Fake Monster,” a coordinated effort to thwart a planned bomb attack targeting the concert.

Two individuals were arrested in connection with the plot: an adult male in Rio Grande do Sul for illegal firearm possession and a teenager in Rio de Janeiro for storing child abuse images. Authorities allege that the suspects were part of an online group promoting hate speech and attempting to radicalize teenagers, including inciting violence against children, adolescents, and the LGBTQ+ community. The group reportedly used digital platforms to recruit participants for coordinated attacks using improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails.
The operation involved executing search and seizure warrants across multiple Brazilian states, including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Mato Grosso, and Rio Grande do Sul. Authorities chose not to inform concert organizers of the threat to prevent public panic, and the event proceeded without incident.

Lady Gaga’s team stated they were unaware of any threats prior to the concert and had received no communication from authorities regarding potential risks. In a statement, her spokesperson emphasized that all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.
The concert itself was a spectacle, featuring songs from Gaga’s latest album “Mayhem” and a setlist that included fan favorites like “Poker Face.” Gaga expressed her gratitude to the Brazilian audience, stating, “Tonight we’re making history, but no one makes history alone. Without all of you, the incredible people of Brazil, I wouldn’t have this moment.”
The thwarted plot has raised concerns about the safety of large public events and the role of online platforms in facilitating extremist activities. Authorities continue to investigate the group’s activities and have emphasized the importance of vigilance in preventing such threats.
