United Airlines Flight Diverted to Newfoundland: Passengers Stranded for Days Amid Severe Weather
Unexpected Diversion
On February 13, 2025, United Airlines Flight 23 departed from Newark Liberty International Airport at 8:00 PM EST, bound for Dublin, Ireland. Approximately three hours into the transatlantic journey, a medical emergency necessitated an unscheduled landing at St. John’s International Airport in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, around 2:30 AM NST. The affected passenger was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Extended Stay Due to Severe Weather
Following the medical diversion, the Boeing 777-200 aircraft, carrying 259 passengers and 12 crew members, was grounded due to severe winter weather conditions, including high winds and heavy snowfall. These adverse conditions rendered the aircraft unable to resume its journey to Dublin, leading to an unexpected stay in St. John’s.
Passenger Experiences
Passengers expressed frustration over limited communication from United Airlines during the ordeal. Phil Magness, one of the stranded travelers, noted, “The airline’s communications with passengers has been sparse to nonexistent, which is really frustrating here.” Additionally, due to safety concerns, access to checked luggage was restricted, leaving many without personal belongings in sub-zero temperatures. One passenger reported going 48 hours without access to their luggage in 20°F (-6°C) weather.
Community Support and Notable Passengers
Among the passengers was Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York. Embracing the unexpected detour, Cardinal Dolan presided over Sunday Mass at the Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s. He expressed gratitude for the local hospitality, stating, “We left Newark, New Jersey, Thursday on our way to Dublin…and we ended up here with you, and we’re still here. We are unable to get out due to inclement weather.”
The residents of St. John’s extended warm hospitality to the stranded passengers, providing support and accommodations during their stay. This act of kindness is reminiscent of the community’s response during Operation Yellow Ribbon in 2001, when numerous flights were diverted to Newfoundland following the September 11 attacks.
Resolution and Departure
After several days of delay, weather conditions improved, allowing Flight 23 to depart from St. John’s on Sunday morning. The aircraft arrived in Dublin at 4:21 PM local time, concluding an unexpected chapter in the passengers’ journey.
Airline Response and Passenger Reflections
United Airlines provided hotel accommodations and meal vouchers to passengers during the delay. However, the lack of timely communication and access to personal belongings led to dissatisfaction among many travelers. The incident underscores the importance of effective communication and contingency planning in the airline industry, especially during unforeseen events.
