A Tragic Loss

In 2001, Goggins married Leanne Knight, a Canadian entrepreneur who owned a successful dog-walking business in Laurel Canyon, California. Despite their shared affection, the couple faced challenges, particularly regarding their living situation in Los Angeles. Leanne struggled with life in the city and expressed a desire to return to Canada, leading to marital strains. In 2004, the couple separated, and shortly thereafter, Leanne died by suicide. Goggins described this period as “unrecoverable,” stating, “I thought it was really unrecoverable for me. Life on the other side of that.”

Seeking Solace Through Travel

In the aftermath of Leanne’s death, Goggins embarked on a three-year journey across the globe, seeking solace and understanding. His travels took him to various countries, including Vietnam, Cambodia, India, and notably, Thailand. Reflecting on this period, Goggins shared, “I spent the next three years looking for an excuse—not to end it, but certainly putting myself in situations that were questionable, not with drugs or anything like that, just life experiences and traveling.”

A Full-Circle Moment in Thailand

Two decades later, Goggins found himself back in Thailand to film “The White Lotus.” The experience was unexpectedly cathartic, as he revisited locations that had been part of his earlier journey through grief. He recounted, “The first island we were staying on, I realized, ‘I’ve been on this road before.’ And then the next island we went to, I realized, ‘I’ve definitely been on this beach before. I know this boardwalk.’ And all of the things kept coming back.”
