WhatsApp Discontinues Service on Outdated Devices Starting May 2025
As of May 5, 2025, WhatsApp has ceased support for several older smartphone models, rendering the app non-functional on these devices. This move aligns with the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance security and introduce advanced features that require more recent hardware and software capabilities.

Affected Devices
iPhones:
WhatsApp now requires iOS 15.1 or later. Consequently, the following iPhone models, which cannot be updated beyond iOS 12.5.7, are no longer supported:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
These models, released between 2013 and 2014, are considered obsolete by Apple and no longer receive software updates or security patches. Without regular security updates, they become more vulnerable to cyber threats, which is a significant reason for WhatsApp discontinuing support.
Android Devices:
As of January 1, 2025, WhatsApp ended support for devices running Android versions earlier than 5.0 (Lollipop). Affected models include:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Reasons for Discontinuation
WhatsApp regularly assesses its supported devices to ensure optimal performance and security. Older devices often lack the necessary hardware capabilities and do not receive essential security updates, making them susceptible to vulnerabilities. By focusing on newer devices, WhatsApp can implement advanced features and maintain a secure environment for its users.
User Guidance
For iPhone Users:
- Check your iOS version by navigating to Settings > General > About.
- If your device runs on iOS 15.1 or later, no action is needed.
- If your device cannot be updated beyond iOS 12.5.7, consider upgrading to a newer model to continue using WhatsApp.
For Android Users:
- Verify your Android version in Settings > About Phone.
- Devices running Android 5.0 or higher are still supported.
- If your device operates on a version below Android 5.0 and cannot be updated, upgrading to a newer device is recommended.
Before transitioning to a new device, ensure you back up your WhatsApp chats to preserve your message history.
The discontinuation of WhatsApp support on older devices underscores the importance of maintaining up-to-date hardware and software to ensure access to modern applications and security features. Users affected by this change are encouraged to upgrade their devices to continue enjoying uninterrupted WhatsApp services.
