A Deadly American Marriage: Unraveling the Web of Lies and Betrayal

The tragic story of Jason Corbett, an Irish businessman brutally killed in 2015, has resurfaced with the release of the Netflix documentary A Deadly American Marriage. The film delves into the complex and harrowing events surrounding his death, the subsequent legal battles, and the enduring impact on his family.

A Promising Start Turned Tragic

Jason Corbett, a widower with two young children, hired Molly Martens, an American au pair, to help care for his family in Limerick, Ireland. Their professional relationship evolved into a romantic one, leading to marriage and a move to North Carolina. However, beneath the surface of their seemingly idyllic life, tensions simmered.

On August 2, 2015, Jason was found bludgeoned to death in his home. Molly and her father, Thomas Martens, a former FBI agent, admitted to killing him with a metal baseball bat and a concrete brick. They claimed self-defense, alleging Jason was abusive—a claim strongly contested by Jason’s family and later by his children.

Manipulation and Psychological Warfare

In the aftermath, disturbing details emerged about Molly’s behavior. She reportedly whispered to Jason’s children that their father had killed their mother with a pillow, despite their mother dying from an asthma attack years earlier. This psychological manipulation aimed to alienate the children from their father and bolster Molly’s custody claims.

Jason’s sister, Tracey Corbett-Lynch, recounted, “She would whisper, ‘Your dad killed Mommy with a pillow,’ into the kids’ ears as she waged a psychological war against my brother Jason.”

Legal Battles and Plea Deals

In 2017, Molly and Thomas were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20–25 years in prison. However, their convictions were overturned in 2021 due to procedural errors, including the exclusion of key testimony from Jason’s children.

Facing a retrial, both accepted plea deals in 2023, pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter. They were sentenced to 51–74 months but were released in June 2024 after serving 51 months, factoring in time served and good behavior.

The Children’s Ordeal

Jack and Sarah Corbett, Jason’s children, endured immense trauma. Initially, under Molly’s influence, they made statements suggesting their father was abusive. Later, they recanted, revealing they had been coached.

In victim impact statements, Sarah expressed the lasting impact: “I was used by her—all I’ve ever been is a piece on her chessboard.

Now living in Limerick with their aunt and uncle, Tracey and David Lynch, Jack and Sarah strive to rebuild their lives. Sarah has become an author, sharing her experiences to help others dealing with grief.
