Serial Fraudster’s Web of Lies Exposed in Gripping Documentary
In May 2025, the documentary series Bad Nanny aired, unraveling the intricate web of deceit woven by Samantha Cookes, a serial fraudster who operated across Ireland and the UK for over a decade. Under various aliases—including Carrie Jade Williams, Lucy Fitzwilliams, and Sadie Harris—Cookes manipulated and defrauded numerous individuals and institutions, leaving a trail of emotional and financial devastation.

A Master of Deception
Cookes’s cons were multifaceted. She posed as a nanny, child therapist, surrogate mother, and even a terminally ill author. Her fabricated persona, Carrie Jade Williams, claimed to suffer from Huntington’s disease, garnering sympathy and financial support. This guise led to her winning a prestigious essay competition and receiving substantial grants from the Arts Council of Ireland.
Her manipulations extended to vulnerable families. In one instance, she organized a fictitious trip to Lapland, collecting deposits from trusting parents. One mother recounted, “We started Googling how many seats were on airplanes but, by the sounds of it and the amount of people that we were involving, we had personally sold at least five airplanes.”
The Unraveling
Cookes’s downfall began when social media users questioned the authenticity of her online presence. Investigations revealed inconsistencies in her stories, leading to the discovery of her true identity. In 2025, she was convicted of multiple counts of fraud and theft, including the theft of nearly €60,000 in social welfare payments. She was sentenced to four years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended.
Impact on Victims
The emotional toll on her victims was profound. One mother, Lynn McDonald, expressed her fear: “I was scared she would come back in the middle of the night and take my child.” Another victim, Hillery Geelan, noted Cookes’s manipulative prowess: “She finds your weak point and your weak point is always going to be your children.“
Media Coverage and Public Reaction
Bad Nanny, co-produced by RTÉ and BBC Northern Ireland, delved deep into Cookes’s deceptive practices, featuring interviews with victims and those who uncovered her lies. The documentary highlighted the collective effort of ordinary individuals who, through vigilance and determination, brought a serial con artist to justice.
