Chris Brown Arrested in the UK Over Alleged Nightclub Bottle Assault
On May 15, 2025, Grammy-winning R&B artist Chris Brown was arrested at a hotel in Manchester in connection with a violent incident that allegedly occurred more than two years ago. The American singer, known for both his chart-topping hits and his controversial past, was detained and charged with grievous bodily harm with intent — one of the most serious assault charges under UK law.
The charges stem from an altercation at the high-profile Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, on February 19, 2023. Brown, 35, is accused of attacking music producer Abe Diaw with a glass bottle of Don Julio 1942 tequila. According to the charges, Brown struck Diaw multiple times in the head and continued the assault by allegedly punching and kicking him even after he collapsed to the floor.

The alleged victim sustained significant injuries and later launched a civil suit in the United States, seeking $16 million in damages, citing emotional distress, medical costs, and lasting trauma from the incident. In court documents filed in New York, Diaw claims the attack was unprovoked and that Brown “smashed a tequila bottle directly onto his head” before unleashing a barrage of punches and kicks.
Brown had been in the UK preparing for the Manchester stop of his “Breezy Bowl XX” tour. Authorities moved swiftly, arresting him at around 2 a.m. at the Lowry Hotel in Salford. He was transported into custody for questioning and was scheduled to appear before magistrates the following day, May 16.
Under UK law, grievous bodily harm with intent (Section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861) carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. It is considered one of the most serious forms of assault, reserved for cases involving sustained and deliberate violence causing serious injuries.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that it had authorised the charge after reviewing evidence presented by the Metropolitan Police. A CPS spokesperson stated: “Criminal proceedings are now active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
Brown’s representatives have so far declined to comment on the arrest. Meanwhile, fans are left uncertain about the fate of the UK leg of his tour. Tickets for upcoming shows in Cardiff, London, Glasgow, and Birmingham had already sold out, with thousands of fans now concerned over cancellations or postponements.
This is not Brown’s first brush with the law. In 2009, he was convicted of felony assault against then-girlfriend Rihanna — an event that remains a dark milestone in his career. Since then, he has faced numerous other allegations, including battery, probation violations, and civil suits, though many of these have been settled out of court or dropped.
Public response to the arrest has been mixed. Some fans have expressed support, arguing for the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, while others point to a pattern of violence that has followed the artist for more than a decade.
Legal experts suggest this case could significantly affect Brown’s international travel and business dealings. Being charged with GBH could complicate future visa applications and touring schedules, depending on the outcome of the trial and any sentence handed down if convicted.
For now, Chris Brown’s immediate future hinges on his court appearance and how the judicial process unfolds in the coming weeks. One thing is clear — this case is likely to dominate headlines, not only because of Brown’s celebrity status but also because of the disturbing nature of the allegations.
