Dead Woman’s Body Used as Incubator
Georgia’s Abortion Law Forces Family to Keep Brain-Dead Woman on Life Support
In a case that has ignited national debate, Adriana Smith, a 30-year-old nurse and mother from Georgia, has been kept on life support for over three months after being declared brain-dead. The decision stems from Georgia’s stringent abortion laws, which prohibit terminating a pregnancy once a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically around six weeks gestation.

Smith was nine weeks pregnant when she suffered a catastrophic medical event leading to her brain death. Despite her condition, doctors informed her family that they are legally obligated to maintain life support until the fetus reaches viability, estimated around 32 weeks.
This situation has placed immense emotional and financial strain on Smith’s family, who describe the experience as “torture.” The case underscores the complex intersection of medical ethics, legal mandates, and reproductive rights, prompting widespread discussion about the implications of such laws on families facing tragic circumstances.
