Dublin Airport Unveils New Portal Amid Rising Noise Complaints
Dublin Airport has introduced an innovative online noise information portal aimed at enhancing transparency and engagement with the local community. This development comes in response to escalating concerns over aircraft noise and its impact on residents’ health and well-being.

Addressing Community Concerns
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in noise-related complaints from residents living near Dublin Airport. According to the airport’s Monthly Noise and Operations Report from August 2024, there was a 33% rise in complainants compared to the previous month, with 82% of complaints lodged by just five individuals. Furthermore, a report highlighted that over 71,500 local residents were “highly annoyed,” and 32,500 were “highly sleep disturbed” due to aircraft noise.
Features of the Noise Information Portal
The newly launched portal offers residents near-real-time data on flight paths, aircraft types, altitudes, and noise levels recorded at various monitoring terminals. This user-friendly platform allows individuals to analyze the noise situation specific to their location and compare it with other areas. The technology, known as ‘InsightFull,’ is utilized by over 25 airports globally, including Gatwick and Toronto Pearson.
Kenny Jacobs, CEO of daa (the operator of Dublin Airport), emphasized the importance of this initiative:
“We know that airport operations impact the community around us and we take that seriously. We have to strike a balance between operating a major international airport and ensuring Ireland has the connectivity it needs, with the needs of those living close to the airport.”
Investment in Noise Mitigation
Dublin Airport has invested over €20 million in noise mitigation measures to date. Key initiatives include:
- Insulation Programs: Nearly 230 residences most affected by noise are eligible for insulation schemes, with 186 homes already insulated.
- Voluntary Buy-Out Options: Offered to 41 homeowners in the vicinity, providing a 30% premium on current market value, along with allowances for associated costs.
- School Insulation: Completed at three local schools, with work commencing at two more in Q2 2025.
- Noise Monitoring: Installation of 25 fixed and two mobile noise monitors across Dublin, Meath, and Wicklow to assess and understand noise impact.
Health Implications of Aircraft Noise
The Environmental Protection Agency’s 2024 State of the Environment Report underscores the adverse health effects of environmental noise, identifying it as the second-largest environmental cause of health problems in the EU. Elevated noise levels have been linked to sleep disturbances, cardiovascular issues, and cognitive impairments in children.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The introduction of the noise information portal aligns with Dublin Airport’s commitment to fostering stronger relationships with its neighbors. An independent survey conducted by Red C in 2024 indicated that community sentiment towards the airport is generally positive, with 77% supporting its expansion.
The airport’s Community Engagement team conducted over 120 home and school visits in 2024, with 35 visits already undertaken in the current year. Regular meetings with community groups are also part of the ongoing efforts to address concerns and gather feedback.
Dublin Airport’s launch of the noise information portal represents a proactive step towards addressing the concerns of local residents regarding aircraft noise. By providing transparent, real-time data and investing in mitigation measures, the airport aims to balance operational needs with community well-being. Continued engagement and responsiveness to feedback will be crucial in ensuring harmonious coexistence between the airport and its neighboring communities.
