Sothern remarked, “If it was in good condition, it would have sold for around €400,000.” ​

The property’s history may have also influenced potential buyers. Sothern acknowledged that the association with Ms. Carey could have been off-putting for some. The house was sold under the instructions of a receiver, and there was no bidding war, with the final buyer being a construction industry professional planning to undertake the necessary renovations. ​

Ms. Carey purchased the property in June 2006 but accumulated mortgage arrears exceeding €370,000 due to non-payment over several years. In 2024, Everyday Finance DAC took control of charges on both the Carey home and the surrounding land. ​

Beyond her financial challenges, Ms. Carey and two former business associates are currently facing multiple charges under the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010. These charges pertain to alleged offenses committed between 2019 and 2021 in connection with the UK-based company, Careysfort Asset Estates. The case has been returned to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court following the service of Books of Evidence.
