Fiona Pender Case Upgraded to Murder
Nearly three decades after Fiona Pender vanished from her Tullamore apartment, Gardaí have officially reclassified her disappearance as a murder investigation. This significant development has prompted a renewed search effort in County Offaly, aiming to uncover vital evidence in a case that has long haunted the nation.

The Disappearance of Fiona Pender
On August 23, 1996, 25-year-old Fiona Pender, who was seven months pregnant, was last seen at approximately 6:00 AM in her Church Street flat in Tullamore. She was described as 5’5″ tall, with long blonde hair, and was wearing bright-colored clothing and white leggings at the time. Despite extensive investigations, including over 300 witness statements and the arrest of five individuals, no trace of Fiona or her unborn child has ever been found.

Transition to a Murder Investigation
On May 26, 2025, Gardaí announced the reclassification of Fiona’s case from a missing person to a murder investigation. This decision was based on the culmination of years of investigative work, including the collection of thousands of documents and reports. A Garda spokesperson stated, “Based on the entirety of the information available to the investigation team, An Garda Síochána can confirm that this missing person investigation has been re-classified as a murder investigation.”
New Search Efforts in County Offaly
Following the reclassification, Gardaí commenced a search operation on open ground near Killeigh, approximately 10 kilometers from Tullamore. The area is undergoing excavation, along with technical and forensic examinations, in hopes of uncovering evidence related to Fiona’s disappearance. The search is expected to continue over several days.
A Family’s Tragic Journey
Fiona’s disappearance has had a profound impact on her family. Her mother, Josephine, was a vocal advocate for justice until her passing in 2017. Fiona’s father, Seán, tragically died by suicide in 2000, and her brother Mark died in a motorcycle accident in 1995.
Public Appeal for Information
Gardaí continue to appeal to the public for any information that may assist in the investigation. They urge anyone who has not yet come forward, or who may have previously withheld information, to contact Tullamore Garda Station at 057 932 7600 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
The reclassification of Fiona Pender’s case as a murder investigation marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice. As new search efforts unfold, there is renewed hope that answers may finally emerge, bringing closure to a case that has remained unresolved for nearly 30 years.
