From Fame to Homelessness: The Nikki Hayes Story
From Airwaves to Adversity: Nikki Hayes’ Journey Through Addiction and Recovery
Nikki Hayes, born Eimear O’Keeffe, was once a prominent voice on Irish radio, captivating audiences with her vibrant presence on stations like RTÉ 2FM, SPIN 1038, and Classic Hits. However, behind the microphone, Hayes grappled with personal demons that would eventually lead her down a path of addiction, homelessness, and legal troubles.

Early Career and Rise to Fame
Hayes began her radio career in the late 1990s, quickly ascending the ranks to secure her own show on RTÉ 2FM by 2003. Her dynamic personality and connection with listeners made her a household name in Ireland’s broadcasting scene.
The Descent into Addiction
Despite professional success, Hayes faced personal challenges that led to a struggle with alcohol addiction. She has candidly shared that her drinking began at a young age and escalated over time. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the isolation and stress exacerbated her addiction. She recounted, “It would have been drinking till like 7, 8 in the morning; and then at the time we were in COVID, so I was broadcasting from home.” This period marked a significant decline in her mental health and professional life.
Hitting Rock Bottom
By 2023, Hayes had lost her job and home, leading to a period of homelessness on the streets of Dublin. She described feeling “invisible” and “ashamed” during this time, stating, “I had a blue sleeping bag with cardboard underneath. That cold feeling when you’re so wet and you’re dirty… it was just horrendous.” Her vulnerability made her susceptible to exploitation, resulting in her involvement in a money laundering case.
Legal Troubles and Rehabilitation
In 2020, Hayes was charged with possessing €10,000 as the proceeds of crime in a Permanent TSB bank account. The court acknowledged her vulnerable state at the time, noting her struggles with mental health and addiction. She was discharged from the indictment in 2024 after completing a residential treatment program and repaying the money involved. The judge recognized her efforts to rehabilitate and her commitment to recovery.
A New Chapter
Now sober for over eighteen months, Hayes is rebuilding her life and career. She has returned to radio, working with East Coast FM, and is actively involved in sharing her story to raise awareness about addiction and mental health. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed immense guilt over the impact her addiction had on her daughter, stating, “She is the most important thing to me. I let her down in the most phenomenal, substantial way.”
Hayes’ story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the possibility of redemption. Her openness about her struggles serves as an inspiration to many facing similar challenges, highlighting the importance of support, treatment, and self-forgiveness in the path to recovery.
