Ireland's Hot Weather: Friday Forecast & Weekend Outlook

Ireland’s Hot Weather: Friday Forecast & Weekend Outlook

It's finally here. The kind of summer day we dream about all year, the one some of us had started to doubt would ever truly arrive. Today, Friday, July 10th, Ireland is experiencing seriously hot weather. Temperatures are high enough to make you want to drop everything, find some shade, and just relax. If you've been waiting for that proper summer feeling, today is it.

Sun shining over a green Irish landscape during hot weather

Met Éireann's forecast confirms what many of us are already feeling: it will be a very warm, if not outright hot, day across most of the country. Expect hazy sunny spells, meaning the sun will remain, but the light might be slightly softened. This morning began with some mist and fog in places, and those along the southern and eastern coasts might even see sea fog at times. Despite this, the heat is definitely present.

Hottest Spots and Cooler Corners

Where should you go if you're looking for the sun? The south of the country is expected to be the warmest, with temperatures reaching as high as 29 degrees Celsius. This isn't a common occurrence for us. Most areas will see a pleasant range of 21 to 29 degrees. Breezes will be light, occasionally moderate, coming from the north or northeast, offering a little relief.

However, the heat won't be uniform across the island. If you're in the west or northwest, it will likely be a bit cooler and cloudier, with a chance of isolated showers early on. Even there, conditions are expected to brighten as the day progresses. So, even if your day starts with a grey sky, hold out hope – the hot weather will likely reach you eventually.

Tonight, the warmth won't dissipate quickly. Most places will stay dry with clear spells, ideal for stargazing or enjoying a late evening outdoors. Don't expect a significant temperature drop; it won't fall below 13 to 17 degrees for most, though the north and northwest might experience a slightly cooler night. Cloud cover will start to build in the north towards morning, but for now, enjoy the mild night.

Looking Ahead: A Sizzling Weekend and Beyond

This isn't just a one-day event. The hot weather in Ireland is expected to continue through the weekend, and it looks like it will only intensify.

Saturday, July 11th: Prepare for another excellent day. Most areas will see dry and sunny conditions, with temperatures ranging from a pleasant 22 degrees up to a scorching 28 or even 29 degrees. Again, the north and northwest will be a bit cloudier and cooler, with highs of 17 to 21 degrees. Light to moderate northerly winds will prevail, picking up slightly in the northwest. It sounds like a perfect day for the beach, a hike, or simply enjoying your garden.

Saturday Night: Expect long clear spells and dry conditions across most of the country. The north might see some isolated showers and more cloud. The main point here is the night-time temperatures. They won't drop below 13 to 18 degrees, making for very warm and humid nights. Sleeping might be challenging for some, but it's a small trade-off for this kind of summer.

Sunday: More glorious sunshine, though the north might experience some cloudier periods. A few scattered showers are possible, but for the most part, it will be dry. Temperatures will reach 22 to 29 degrees, with eastern coasts being a little cooler due to mostly moderate easterly winds developing. If you're planning any outdoor activities, Sunday looks ideal.

Sunday Night: Another dry and largely clear night, but it will remain very mild and muggy. Temperatures won't fall below 13 to 19 degrees. Time to use a fan, or perhaps take a cold shower before bed.

Monday: Dry, sunny conditions continue, though the sunshine might become a bit hazy from the south later in the day. There's a slight chance of some heavier showers clipping southern coastal areas in the evening, but generally, it's another warm day. Temperatures will be between 20 and 28 degrees, with eastern coasts once again being the coolest in light to moderate easterly breezes.

Tuesday: Largely dry and sunny again. The south and east might see a few showers, but nothing significant. Temperatures will be between 20 and 28 degrees, with the southwest appearing to be the warmest spot.

The Peak of the Heatwave: Mid-Week Mayhem

Now, this is where it gets truly interesting, and potentially a bit challenging for some. The forecast for mid-week indicates the hot weather in Ireland will reach its peak.

Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be very warm or hot, with temperatures potentially reaching the low 30s locally. Yes, you read that correctly – the low 30s. This is exceptionally warm for Ireland, and it means we'll need to take precautions. The nights will also continue to be warm and muggy, offering little relief. There is a possibility of some thundery showers during this period, which is not uncommon with such high temperatures.

As we head towards next Friday and the weekend, temperatures are expected to fall back closer to average. So, enjoy this heatwave while it lasts, because it won't be forever.

What to Do During This Heatwave

With the hot weather upon us, it's important to stay safe and enjoy it responsibly.

  • Hydrate Often: Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid excessive alcohol or sugary drinks.
  • Seek Shade: Especially during the hottest part of the day (usually between 11 am and 3 pm), try to stay in the shade.
  • Sun Protection: Wear high-factor sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Our skin isn't always accustomed to this intensity of sun.
  • Check on Vulnerable People: Look out for elderly neighbors, young children, and anyone who might be more susceptible to the heat.
  • Keep Cool Indoors: If your home gets too warm, try to keep blinds or curtains closed during the day. Open windows at night if it's cooler outside.
  • Enjoy the Outdoors Responsibly: This is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy our beautiful country. Head to a local park, enjoy a walk by the coast (but be mindful of sea fog), or simply relax in your garden. For more advice on staying safe in the sun, you can check out resources from health organizations like the HSE, which often provide guidance on heat safety.

This kind of sustained hot weather in Ireland is a rare treat for many of us, but it also requires a bit of common sense. Let's enjoy the sunshine, stay safe, and make the most of this truly exceptional spell of summer weather. It's happening, Ireland, it's definitely happening!
