Michaela Newcombe Funeral

A Community United in Grief: Remembering Michaela Newcombe

Mullingar, Co Westmeath, gathered today, July 9th, 2026, to say a heartbreaking goodbye to Michaela Newcombe. The 23-year-old died in a car crash near Málaga, Spain, last month. Her partner, Mark McCullagh-Crichton, and his sister-in-law, Amy McCullagh, also died in the accident. Family, friends, and the wider community came together at the Cathedral of Christ the King to remember a young life cut short.

Fr Phil Gaffney, the parish priest, spoke about the collective sorrow, saying that for a parent or grandparent to bury their child "disrupts the rhythm of the world." His words reflected the pain felt by many, acknowledging the grief of Michaela's loved ones.

An Unbreakable Bond: Michaela's World

During the Mass, details about Michaela Newcombe's life showed her as a cherished individual. Her world revolved around her nanny, Francie, and grandad, Eddie. She had lived with them since age three, forming what was described as a "formidable, unbreakable bond." Her nanny was her best friend, her grandad her personal chauffeur. While living with her grandparents, she also deeply loved her parents, Davy and Lisa, her brothers, sister, and her nephews. She was clearly at the heart of a loving family.

Michaela had a zest for life, marked by her love for shopping, travel, and fashion. She was known as a loyal and hard worker, though managing finances wasn't always her strong suit, with a "small sub" from her aunt Anne being a regular request.

Tributes to a Radiant Spirit

Family members brought forward items that symbolized Michaela's life and passions. A family photo, a cherished teddy bear, her favorite coat, and the essentials she never left home without – her mobile phone, hair straightener, and makeup bag – were placed on the altar.

Fr Gaffney spoke about the unfairness of such a sudden loss, acknowledging that while death takes someone from our sight, it can never erase the memories created. "The fragrance of her spirit, the echo of her laughter and the light she brought to so many people's lives, will remain with us forever," he said.

The family had endured over a week of waiting for Michaela's body to be repatriated. The priest noted that there was a sense of relief once she was home, allowing the mourning process to truly begin and proper respect to be paid.

A Legacy of Love and Laughter

Fr Gaffney assured the family that the community would "wrap them in love" to help share their burden. He encouraged everyone to remember Michaela's "friendly face," her "beautiful, unforgettable smile." The outpouring of tributes on social media over the past ten days, he noted, spoke volumes about her impact. "She had a rare, radiant gift of lighting up every room she entered. She brought warmth to our lives, and she truly made the world a brighter place."

When a young life like Michaela's is taken, it feels like a piece of our collective future is stolen. The priest's words, "No mother, grandmother, expects to bury their child. It disrupts the rhythm of the world," truly hit home. Michaela Newcombe, in her short life, made "a lasting impression on so many people," leaving behind "a legacy full of love and treasured memories."

At the close of the Mass, Michaela's family extended their gratitude for the support they received from friends and the wider community. They also acknowledged the efforts of the Spanish emergency services, the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, and the assistance of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.

The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust offers support to families who have lost loved ones abroad, helping to bring them home. Their work, alongside the Department of Foreign Affairs, provides a vital lifeline during difficult times.

Today, Mullingar stands united in sorrow, but also in the shared memory of Michaela Newcombe – a young woman whose light touched so many, and whose spirit will continue to shine in the hearts of those who loved her. Her passing is a reminder of life's fragility, but also of the enduring power of community, love, and remembrance.
