Kneecap’s Controversial Remarks Lead to Eden Project Gig Cancellation
Irish rap group Kneecap has recently been at the center of a significant controversy following the cancellation of their scheduled performance at the Eden Project in Cornwall. The decision came after resurfaced footage from a 2023 concert showed a member of the group making inflammatory remarks, including “The only good Tory is a dead Tory” and “Kill your local MP” .

In response to the backlash, Kneecap issued a public apology to the families of murdered MPs Jo Cox and Sir David Amess, stating, “We do not, and have never, supported Hamas or Hezbollah. We condemn all attacks on civilians, always. It is never okay” . However, the apology has been met with criticism from political figures and the public, with some describing it as “half-hearted” .
The controversy has also led to calls for Kneecap to be removed from upcoming festival lineups, including Glastonbury, and has prompted an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit . The band maintains that the footage has been taken out of context and is part of a “coordinated smear campaign” against them .
Kneecap’s situation underscores the ongoing debate about the boundaries of artistic expression and the responsibilities of public figures in addressing sensitive political issues. As the investigation continues and public discourse evolves, the implications for freedom of speech and artistic license remain at the forefront of the conversation.
