Leona Maguire Faces Uphill Battle at 2025 U.S. Women’s Open

Leona Maguire, Ireland’s leading female golfer, encountered a challenging start at the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open held at Erin Hills, Wisconsin. Opening with a 76, she found herself eight shots behind the leaders, tied for 105th place after the first round.

Her round was marred by a double-bogey on the par-5 14th hole, followed by bogeys on the 17th and 2nd holes. A birdie on the 3rd offered a brief respite, but another bogey on the 8th hole added to her struggles.

Maguire’s recent form has been inconsistent, with back-to-back missed cuts leading up to the tournament. Her world ranking has slipped from 31st to 80th over the past year.

Despite the setbacks, Maguire remains focused on improving her game. She acknowledged the need to synchronize all aspects of her play, stating, “I just haven’t quite got all the pieces together and on the same week yet.”

Erin Hills, known for its length and challenging terrain, favors long hitters. Maguire, with an average driving distance of 242.93 yards, recognizes the importance of precision and course management to navigate the course effectively.

As the tournament progresses, Maguire aims to leverage her experience and resilience to overcome the early deficit and make the cut.
