A Historic Day of Records and Radiance
The 2025 London Marathon, held on April 27, was a landmark event, marked by record-breaking participation, notable debuts, and unseasonably warm weather. With over 56,000 runners crossing the finish line, the marathon set a new world record for the most finishers in a single race, surpassing the previous record held by the 2023 New York Marathon.

Weather Conditions: A Sunny Challenge
Participants faced unusually warm temperatures for April, with the mercury rising to 22°C (71.6°F) by the afternoon. The day began with cooler conditions, around 10°C (50°F), providing some relief for early starters. However, as the day progressed, the heat became a significant factor, prompting medical experts to advise runners to adjust their pace and reconsider wearing elaborate costumes .
Elite Highlights: Debuts and Returns
The men’s elite race featured Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, the half-marathon world record holder, making his full marathon debut. Kiplimo expressed his excitement and readiness, stating, “I just want to run my own race, so that I can run my personal best” . He faced stiff competition from seasoned marathoners, including Kenya’s Alexander Mutiso Munyao, the defending champion, and Ethiopia’s Olympic champion Tamirat Tola.
Eliud Kipchoge, the legendary Kenyan runner and four-time London Marathon winner, returned to the race after a five-year hiatus. At 40, Kipchoge participated to support charitable causes, emphasizing the importance of giving back: “I am coming here to support London’s good causes. It is about the charity events being done by London Marathon, that is why I am here” .
Celebrity Participation: Stars on the Move
The marathon also saw a host of celebrities taking part, adding glamour and drawing public interest. Notable participants included former footballers Jack Wilshere and John Terry, singer Alexandra Burke, and TV personalities Kelly Brook and Chris Evans . Their involvement not only entertained spectators but also highlighted various charitable causes, inspiring many with their dedication and efforts.
Inspiring Stories: Triumph Over Adversity
Among the many personal stories, British long-distance runner Eilish McColgan made headlines by calling for stricter identification measures on social media to combat online abuse. Despite facing persistent body-shaming, McColgan remained active on social media to set a positive example for young followers and challenge harmful stereotypes about athletes’ bodies.
Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee also made his marathon debut, embracing the challenge as a path for personal growth beyond his triathlon successes. Inspired by childhood memories of watching the marathon and motivated by the desire to explore new limits, Yee aimed to complete the 26.2-mile race in 2:08 to 2:10, which could place him among Great Britain’s all-time top ten.
