Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry’s Zurich Classic Defense: A Promising Start
Fresh off his historic Masters victory, Rory McIlroy teamed up with fellow Irishman Shane Lowry to defend their title at the 2025 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The duo commenced their campaign with a commendable 8-under-par 64 in the opening round, positioning themselves six strokes behind the leading pair.

A Steady Start Amidst Fierce Competition
The Zurich Classic, unique for its team format on the PGA Tour, began with a four-ball round where each player plays their own ball, and the best score on each hole counts for the team. McIlroy and Lowry’s round featured an eagle, seven birdies, and a single bogey. Lowry initiated the momentum with early birdies, while McIlroy contributed significantly on the back nine, including a notable eagle on the par-5 second hole.
Despite both players encountering challenges on the sixth hole, resulting in a bogey, they managed to recover and finish the round strongly. McIlroy acknowledged the importance of the upcoming alternate shot formats, stating, “Tomorrow and Sunday are the important days, and if you can shoot good scores on those days, you can move up the board pretty quickly.”
Record-Breaking Performances Set the Pace
The first round witnessed exceptional performances, notably from PGA Tour rookies Isaiah Salinda and Kevin Velo, who set a new tournament record with a 14-under-par 58. Their impressive play included an eagle and 12 birdies, establishing a formidable lead. Danish twins Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard also showcased remarkable skill, finishing just one stroke behind the leaders.
McIlroy’s Return to Competition
McIlroy’s participation in the Zurich Classic marked his first competitive appearance since achieving the career Grand Slam at the Masters. Reflecting on his return, McIlroy expressed gratitude for the support, saying, “It’s always nice to play in front of a supportive, enthusiastic crowd, and looking forward to doing more of that over the next few days.” His presence added significant interest to the event, drawing large galleries eager to witness the Masters champion in action.
The Road Ahead
As the tournament progresses, McIlroy and Lowry aim to capitalize on their strong partnership and experience. The Zurich Classic’s format alternates between four-ball and foursomes, testing the synergy and strategy of each team. With the defending champions demonstrating resilience and cohesion, they remain contenders for back-to-back titles, a feat yet to be accomplished since the event adopted its team format.
