No Body, No Crime: Italian Court Frees Man Accused in Cruise Mystery

In a significant legal development, Daniel Belling, a German national residing in Ireland, has been acquitted by the Rome Court of Appeal of charges related to the disappearance of his wife, Xiang Lei Li, during a Mediterranean cruise in 2017. The court’s decision overturns a previous conviction that had sentenced Belling to 26 years in prison for murder and destruction of a corpse.

Background of the Case

The case began in February 2017 when Belling, his wife Xiang Lei Li, and their two children embarked on an 11-day Mediterranean cruise aboard the MSC Magnifica, departing from Civitavecchia, Italy. Upon the cruise’s conclusion, a headcount revealed that Xiang Lei Li was missing. Belling was subsequently arrested at Rome’s Ciampino Airport while attempting to fly back to Dublin with their children. He claimed that his wife had disembarked during a stop in Greece and had not returned.

Initial Conviction

In a 2024 trial held in absentia, Belling was convicted by an Italian court and sentenced to 26 years in prison. The prosecution alleged that he had murdered his wife and disposed of her body, possibly by placing it in a suitcase and throwing it overboard. However, the case lacked direct evidence, as Xiang Lei Li’s body was never found, and there were no eyewitnesses to the alleged crime.

Appeal and Acquittal

On May 29, 2025, the Rome Court of Appeal acquitted Belling, citing insufficient evidence to uphold the conviction. The court emphasized the absence of concrete proof linking Belling to his wife’s disappearance and the lack of a body, which made it challenging to confirm that a crime had occurred. Belling’s defense consistently argued that the case was built on circumstantial evidence and lacked substantiation.

Implications of the Verdict

The acquittal raises questions about the challenges of prosecuting cases without direct evidence, such as a body or eyewitness testimony. It also highlights the importance of the presumption of innocence in legal proceedings. While the court’s decision brings an end to the legal proceedings against Belling, the mystery surrounding Xiang Lei Li’s disappearance remains unresolved.

Belling’s Response

Following the acquittal, Belling expressed relief and reiterated his claim of innocence. He maintained that his wife had voluntarily left the cruise and that he had no involvement in her disappearance. Belling’s current whereabouts are not publicly known, and he has not indicated any plans to return to Italy.
