Panic in Paradise: 5.8-Magnitude Quake Rocks Turkey and Greece
In the early hours of June 3, 2025, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the southwestern coast of Turkey near the resort town of Marmaris. The tremors were felt across the region, including on the Greek island of Rhodes, causing widespread panic among residents and tourists.

Impact and Casualties
The earthquake occurred at approximately 2:17 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located in the Mediterranean Sea. Despite its moderate magnitude, the quake’s depth of around 68 kilometers allowed it to be felt over a broad area. In Turkey, the tremors led to the tragic death of a 14-year-old girl in Fethiye, who suffered a fatal panic-induced heart attack. Additionally, nearly 70 individuals sustained injuries, primarily due to panic-induced actions such as jumping from windows and balconies in an attempt to flee buildings.
On the Greek island of Rhodes, residents and tourists reported intense shaking, leading many to evacuate buildings and spend the night outdoors. Fortunately, no significant injuries or structural damages were reported in Greece.
Expert Insights
Seismologist Efthimios Lekkas, head of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, commented on the nature of the quake, stating, “Although it was felt in a wider area, it will not have significant impact on the surface.” He emphasized that the depth of the earthquake reduced the potential for surface damage.
Dr. Margarita Segou, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey, noted that earthquakes of this magnitude are common in the region due to its location along the Hellenic Trench. She reassured that the probability of a larger earthquake immediately following this event is only heightened for a few days.
Travel and Safety Considerations
Despite the earthquake, travel operations in the region have largely returned to normal. Flights to and from Rhodes and Dalaman airports are operating as usual, with no significant disruptions reported. Tourists are advised to stay informed, follow local safety instructions, and be aware of basic earthquake safety practices.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has not issued any travel advisories against visiting Greece or Turkey following the earthquake. Travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to guidance from local authorities.
