Pet Monkey Scam Leads to Murder: The Tina Satchwell Case

In March 2017, Tina Satchwell vanished from her home in Youghal, County Cork. For over six years, her disappearance remained a mystery, with her husband, Richard Satchwell, asserting that she had left voluntarily. However, in October 2023, Tina’s remains were discovered buried beneath the stairs of their residence, leading to Richard’s arrest and subsequent conviction for her murder.

A Disturbing Motive

Investigations revealed that a significant point of contention between the couple was Richard’s involvement in an online scam concerning the purchase of pet monkeys. He had been communicating with entities claiming to sell marmoset monkeys, sending substantial sums of money without receiving the animals. In a message during this period, Richard expressed distress, stating, “I am in a mess right now because my wife has said she is leaving me over this.”

The Crime and Cover-Up

On March 20, 2017, Richard claimed that Tina attacked him with a chisel, leading to a fatal altercation. He stated that he defended himself using a dressing gown belt, resulting in her death. Subsequently, he concealed her body in a chest freezer before burying it under the stairs, covering the area with concrete.

Delayed Discovery

Despite initial searches, Tina’s remains were not found until 2023. A renewed investigation, prompted by inconsistencies in Richard’s statements and forensic evidence, led authorities to conduct an invasive search of the property. A cadaver dog indicated the area beneath the stairs, where her body was ultimately discovered.

Trial and Conviction

In May 2025, Richard Satchwell was found guilty of Tina’s murder. The jury rejected his self-defense claim, considering the premeditated nature of the crime and his efforts to mislead investigators. He is currently serving a life sentence.

Community Reaction

The case profoundly affected the Youghal community. Residents expressed relief at the verdict, with many having long suspected Richard’s involvement. Tina is remembered as a gentle and kind individual, and her tragic death has sparked discussions on domestic abuse and the importance of thorough investigations in missing person cases.
