Plans to Declare Carlo Acutis a Saint Put on Hold After Pope’s Death

Carlo Acutis: The Postponed Canonization of a Modern-Day Saint

The Catholic Church’s plans to canonize Carlo Acutis, a 15-year-old Italian teenager known for his deep faith and technological prowess, have been postponed following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025. Acutis, who passed away from leukemia in 2006, was set to become the first millennial saint, with a ceremony originally scheduled for April 27, 2025, during the Jubilee celebration for adolescents.

A Life of Faith and Technology

Born in London in 1991 and raised in Milan, Carlo Acutis was a devout Catholic from a young age. He combined his passion for technology with his faith, creating a website that cataloged Eucharistic miracles worldwide. His dedication to the Church and innovative use of digital media earned him the nickname “God’s influencer.”

Acutis’s mother, Antonia Salzano, described him as “an ordinary child like others,” noting that his extraordinary quality was his deep devotion to Jesus.

The Path to Sainthood

The process of canonization in the Catholic Church involves several stages, including the recognition of miracles attributed to the individual’s intercession. In 2020, Acutis was beatified after the Vatican confirmed a miraculous healing of a Brazilian boy suffering from a rare pancreatic disorder.

A second miracle, involving the recovery of a Costa Rican student with severe head trauma, was recognized in 2024, clearing the way for his canonization.

Postponement of the Canonization Ceremony

The unexpected death of Pope Francis necessitated the postponement of Acutis’s canonization ceremony. As canonizations are traditionally presided over by the reigning pope, the Vatican announced that the ceremony would be suspended until a new pope is elected.

Despite the delay, the Mass for adolescents, part of the ongoing Holy Year celebrations, will proceed as planned, albeit with some modifications.

Legacy and Continued Veneration

Carlo Acutis’s remains are enshrined in Assisi, dressed in casual clothes, reflecting his youthful spirit. His tomb has become a pilgrimage site, attracting thousands of visitors who seek inspiration from his life and works.

His story continues to resonate with young Catholics worldwide, serving as a bridge between traditional faith and modern technology.
