This unconventional method was employed to catch perpetrators of the notorious “three-cups challenge” or “shell game,” a scam targeting unsuspecting tourists. ​

Inspector Darren Watson, donning the Batman costume, and Police Constable Abdi Osman, as Robin, executed the operation on February 15, 2025. Their decision to disguise themselves stemmed from the scammers’ familiarity with local officers, which had previously allowed them to evade arrest. ​

The Sting Operation

The officers’ plan proved successful when they arrested two individuals: 32-year-old Eugen Stocia and 53-year-old Constica-Gherorghe Barbu. Barbu was convicted the following day and fined £925, while Stocia was convicted in absentia on April 10 after failing to appear in court; a warrant has been issued for his arrest. ​

Inspector Watson commented on the operation, stating, “We knew that if we were going to catch them, we would have to think outside the box. Although dressing up may not be the most conventional policing method, we were thrilled to see that in this case, it worked perfectly.” ​
