A Gross Breach of Trust in Cork

The incident occurred on May 28, 2022, when O’Leary invited Ms. O’Donoghue, who lived adjacent to him, to share a drink. After consuming wine and brandy, which O’Leary continued to top up without her consent, Ms. O’Donoghue passed out. She awoke to find O’Leary raping her.

The Trial and Sentencing

During the trial at the Central Criminal Court in Cork, Ms. O’Donoghue waived her right to anonymity to ensure O’Leary could be named. She described the ordeal of the trial, including the humiliation of having her underwear shown in court and her integrity questioned during cross-examination.

Ms. Justice Siobhán Lankford sentenced O’Leary to seven years in prison, highlighting the gross breach of trust and his lack of remorse. The sentence was backdated to February 11, 2025, when O’Leary first entered custody.

A Survivor’s Message

Ms. O’Donoghue, now living with PTSD, depression, and panic attacks, delivered a powerful message to other victims: “I urge you to take back your power – speak your truth. You will be believed.” She emphasized the importance of breaking the silence surrounding sexual violence.

Community Support and Resources

Ms. O’Donoghue expressed gratitude to Detective Garda Rachel McGrath, Mary Crilly of the Cork Sexual Violence Centre, and her support network for their assistance throughout the ordeal.
