Powerful Earthquake Strikes Crete: Tsunami Warning Issued

On May 14, 2025, a significant seismic event occurred in the southeastern Aegean Sea, registering a magnitude of 5.9. The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 48 kilometers southeast of Kasos, at a depth of 35 kilometers. The tremors were felt across various regions, including Crete, Rhodes, Karpathos, and as far as Egypt. In response, Greek authorities issued a precautionary tsunami warning, advising residents and tourists in affected areas to move away from coastal regions and seek higher ground.

Seismic Activity in the Region

Greece is situated in one of Europe’s most seismically active zones due to the convergence of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. This geological positioning makes the region prone to earthquakes. Earlier in the year, the Santorini-Amorgos zone experienced heightened seismic activity, recording over 7,700 tremors within a short period.

Impact and Response

Despite the earthquake’s strength, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or significant property damage. The depth of the quake likely mitigated its impact on the surface. However, as a precaution, authorities temporarily closed popular tourist sites such as the Samaria Gorge in Crete to inspect for potential rockfalls or structural issues.

Travel Advisory

Currently, there are no travel restrictions or advisories against visiting Crete or other Greek islands. Flights and ferry services continue to operate normally. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to any local guidance or instructions.

Safety Measures

In the event of seismic activity, it is crucial to follow safety protocols:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor updates from local authorities and emergency services.
  • Avoid Coastal Areas: In the case of tsunami warnings, move to higher ground and stay away from the shoreline.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and have an emergency kit ready.

While the recent earthquake underscores the seismic risks inherent to the region, the prompt response by Greek authorities and the absence of significant damage highlight the effectiveness of current preparedness measures. Visitors to Crete and surrounding islands should remain vigilant, stay informed, and follow any official advisories to ensure their safety.
