The Crimes

Between 1967 and 1987, Fred and Rose West perpetrated a series of heinous crimes, including the torture, sexual assault, and murder of at least 12 young women and girls. Many of these victims were buried at their residence, 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester, which later became infamously known as the “House of Horrors.”

The Investigation

The couple’s crimes came to light in 1994 following the disappearance of their daughter, Heather. A tip-off led police to excavate their property, uncovering multiple human remains. Fred West was arrested and charged but died by suicide in prison in 1995 before his trial. Rose West was convicted of 10 murders and is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

The Documentary

Directed by Dan Dewsbury, the series utilizes newly discovered police recordings and firsthand accounts to provide an in-depth look into the Wests’ crimes. It features interviews with investigators, journalists, and legal professionals, shedding light on how the couple managed to evade detection for so long.

Public and Critical Reception

The documentary has sparked discussions about the nature of evil and the societal failures that allowed such crimes to occur. Critics have noted the series’ unflinching portrayal of the Wests’ actions and the emotional toll on those involved in the case.
