Trinity College Donates 1,000 Willow Trees for Sustainable Water Treatment
Trinity College Dublin’s Environmental Engineering Department recently donated 1,000 willow trees as part of an initiative to promote sustainable wastewater treatment. The project aimed to encourage eco-friendly water management solutions while providing the public with the opportunity to participate in an innovative environmental effort.

A Green Solution to Wastewater Management
The initiative was linked to Trinity College’s ongoing research into alternative wastewater treatment methods. Unlike traditional soil percolation systems, which can lead to harmful runoff contaminating streams and rivers, willows have the potential to absorb and filter wastewater efficiently while producing zero discharge.
This technique, part of the EvapoTreat Project, focuses on using willow trees as a natural filtration system, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional wastewater treatment processes.
According to the research team, the trees were distributed to individuals and groups interested in reforestation, ecological restoration, and sustainable land use.

Why Willow Trees?
Willow trees are highly absorbent and fast-growing, making them an ideal natural solution for managing excess water and pollutants. Their deep root systems help:
- Filter contaminants from wastewater
- Prevent soil erosion
- Support biodiversity
- Improve water quality in nearby streams and rivers
By donating these trees, Trinity College helped support local conservation efforts, while also educating the public about the potential of nature-based wastewater treatment solutions.
Public Response and Environmental Impact
The donation event generated strong interest, with many individuals collecting willow saplings for their own land or projects. Environmental advocates praised the initiative for combining academic research with practical community outreach, highlighting its potential impact on local water management.
Although the donation event has concluded, the research behind it continues. Trinity College Dublin remains committed to exploring sustainable water treatment technologies and encouraging further adoption of green infrastructure.
