Zelenskyy Shows Up for Peace Talks—But Putin Sends a ‘Decorative’ Team
On May 15, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Ankara, Turkey, prepared for direct peace negotiations with Russia. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin was notably absent, choosing instead to dispatch a delegation led by Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin to Istanbul. This move has been interpreted by many as a lack of commitment to meaningful dialogue.

Zelenskyy criticized the Russian delegation as “decorative,” questioning their authority to make substantive decisions. He emphasized the need for direct talks with Putin, stating, “We need to understand what kind of level the Russian delegation is, and what mandate they have and whether they can make any decisions” .
International Reactions and Mediation Efforts
Former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed skepticism about the talks’ potential success without Putin’s direct involvement. He remarked, “Nothing’s going to happen until Putin and I get together, okay?” . Meanwhile, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced his intention to urge Putin to participate in the talks, highlighting the global community’s desire for a resolution .
European leaders have also weighed in, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledging to strengthen Europe’s conventional military capabilities and France advocating for increased sanctions against Russia to pressure a change in stance .
The Road Ahead
The absence of high-level Russian representation in Istanbul casts doubt on the efficacy of the peace talks. Zelenskyy’s insistence on direct negotiations with Putin underscores the challenges in reaching a consensus. As the conflict continues, the international community remains hopeful yet cautious about the prospects for a peaceful resolution.
